National Trust Weddings
Weddings and the City
When choosing your wedding venue you may think that National Trust Properties are all ‘Pride and Prejudice’ style country manors. Well many of them are of course, but there are plenty of National Trust venues jam packed with character, history and antiques within popular cities and towns in the UK. So if you are more Carrie Bradshaw than Elizabeth Bennet then the following wedding venues are for you…
Treasurer’s House
York, North Yorkshire
‘An oasis of tranquillity in the centre of the city.’ Built over a Roman road and on the site of the home of the Treasurers of York Minster, this award winning attraction is in the heart of the ancient city of York. Ceremonies can take place in the Great Hall, which has a capacity for 80. The Grand Hall overlooks an elegant walled garden and is full of 17th-century furniture, pictures and textiles creating the perfect setting for a wedding. You can also have a small reception in the house and garden.
Sutton House
Hackney, London
As the oldest domestic dwelling in London, Sutton House is a magical and intimate setting for a wedding. Built in 1535 the Tudor oak-panelled rooms, open stone fireplaces and a secluded inner courtyard create a stunning setting for a wedding.
The Great Chamber has a capacity for 50 and the Wenlock Barn for 100 for the ceremony and a drinks reception.
Peckover House and Garden
Wisbech, Cambridgeshire
‘A tranquil oasis amidst a bustling Cambridgeshire market town on one of the finest Georgian streets in England.’ Peckover House dates from 1722 and is fast becoming one of the most popular venues for civil marriages in the area. Wedding ceremonies can take place in either the Library or the Reed Barn. The Victorian Library is the largest room in the house with a capacity for 70. The Reed Barn, which can also sit 70, is a magnificent 17th century threshing barn with a beautiful, traditional English walled garden, which is a sea of colour in the summer time and perfect for the drinks reception. The Reed Barn is also perfect for wedding breakfasts and receptions allowing for up to 120 for evening buffet and music until 11pm.
Bath Assembly Rooms
Bath, Somerset
This stunning Georgian venue, dating back to 1771 was originally built for entertaining. Located in the centre of this World Heritage City, with all major travel links close by this venue is ideal for civil ceremony, drinks and reception. The capacity of the Ballroom is 500, The Tea Room 250, The Octagon Room 120, the Card Room 80 and The Fashion Museum 100.
Town centre weddings are also great for those hit by the credit crunch – couples will get away with just paying for the ceremony and a drinks reception and no one will feel short changed. Having the wedding in town, gives friends and family the opportunity to organise a casual meal for their group and maybe even a cheeky dance afterwards!
Slightly out of town, but still only a short taxi ride away, are Hughenden Manor, High Wycombe – Disraeli’s country home; Quarry Bank Mill, Wilmslow – one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites with picturesque garden; Ham House and Osterley Park, both only a tube ride away from central London; Ormesby Hall, Middlesbrough – an intimate 18th-century family mansion.
